Over a century ago an inventor named Nikola Tesla developed plans to do just that, transmit electrical power without wires. He experimented with electric lights that were illuminated through electrostatic induction. He connected the lights to metal sheets held in a strong electric field being produced by a remote transmitter.

In 1898 he planned system consisting of giant towers that could form a global wireless communications network and a be able to deliver electricity over hugh areas without wires.

The first tower was constructed in 1901 on Long Island and named the Wardenclyffe Tower. J.P. Morgan and other backers invested $150,000. The only problem was the electricty might not be able metered so the backers pulled out, since people my be able to hel themselves to the electricity for free.

Today several firms, including Fulton Innovation, eCoupled, WiTricity and Powercast, are pursuing scaled down versions to deliver electrical power without wires over short distances. WiTricity has showen it is capable of sending enough energy across a room to power a flat-screen television using its technology, called “resonant magnetic coupling”. This is not exactly the same approach as Tesla’s but still used some ofhis work.

I got pretty excited when I saw Hughes Net Deals on the Internet yesterday. I have been looking to change our provider for a little while now and finally I felt like I found something worth all the trouble! I ran it by my husband, of course. He thought it was pretty sweet too. He is all about getting the best deal. Thanksgiving is the worst for it though. Don’t get me wrong, I am glad we get the deals we do, but it is such a project. He does research ahead of time on what stores will have what types of deals. Then he usually gives me and anyone else that wants to come with us some sort of planned timeline of when he wants to do what and where. To say the least, he is very serious about the whole thing. Recently, he has tried to tone it down a bit. Not everyone wants to drive so far for deals and on such a structured schedule. Even though he has toned down, his deal searching has really rubbed off on me. Any time I find something good, he is definitely pumped.
